Ed Gillespie is Creative Director and co-founder of Futerra, a communications company working with corporations, governments and non-profits to produce strategic and creative communications dedicated to promoting and participating in sustainable development.

In a varied, complementary career Gillespie has taught in Jamaica for a year, worked for the Survival Natural History Film Unit, as a marine biologist in Australia, New Caledonia and Orkney and was environmental manager for London Transport. He has Masters degrees in both Marine Conservation and Sustainable Development. At Futerra he co-writes and produces short provocative films on social and environmental issues, develops multimedia educational materials, and runs training workshops amongst a host of other media related activities.

Over the past years the Futerra team has worked with FTSE 100 companies, tiny local businesses, national government departments, schoolchildren, the UN, filmmakers, accountants and charities. In all its work Futerra found innovative, creative and strategic ways to promote sustainable development.

According to Futerra’s website: “Often our clients and partners have an idea, but need help to make it happen. Perhaps they need training on sustainable development and corporate responsibility, but don’t want another boring seminar. Or need to explain a new process to a range of audiences, without producing another unread leaflet. Or want to understand an issue, without having a load of technical jargon thrown at them.

“Our work is based on strong personal commitments to the cause of sustainable development. We are a co-owned company and make decisions collectively about who to work with and what is important for us. Our approach is based on our 10 Rules of sustainable communications, and ‘worthy’ or ‘righteous’ communications are outlawed in Futerra.”
